Names of Lord Shiva: Chandrashekara

If you thought that the moon's waxing and waning phase is due to the moon's orbit around the earth..ahem ...ahem...:-)

Chandrashekara:
Daksha Prajapati was one of the sons of Brahma. His daughter was Sati who married Shiva.
Daksha had 27 daughters and they were all married to chandra(moon). Chandra was very fond of only one of those stars namely Rohini and spent most of the time with her. This made the other stars very sad and they eventually complained to Daksha. Daksha immediately cursed Chandra that he would lose his lustre. Chandra tensed over this curse approached Shiva. Shiva then took Chandra and placed him on his head so that he would regain his lustre periodically by drinking the Soma on Shiva's head. Hence the waxing and waning of the moon.
Another legend says that inorder to cool Shiva when he partook the Halahala poison during the churning of the ocean, chandra sat on the Jata of Shiva.

Hail Chandrashekara: the refuge of the moon
Here is some trance music by Prem Joshua titled "Shiva Moon"

Here is a side story:
Since most of you find it difficult to put down the Shiva Trilogy by Amish, here is the legend behind the Chandravamsa. Shiva played an important role in the creation of Chandravamis.
Brihaspati was the guru of the Devas. He was married to Tara. Tara was so fond of Chandra that she began to live with him. Brihaspati was terribly angry with this and summoned Tara for one of the yagnas to be performed. Brihaspati later discovered that Tara was pregnant. When he realised that Chandra was the father of the child he cursed that the child would neither be a woman or a man and hence a napunsak. The child was named Buddh(Mercury) for he was extremely intelligent.
Buddh, when he became a youth was very sad that he wouldnt be able to marry anyone because of his gender. However once when Shiva and Parvathi were walking through the Sharavana, Parvathi did not want any other man around her. So Shiva turned the entire forest feminine. Unfortunately a king Ila who had come hunting also turned into a woman. He pleaded to Parvathi that he be changed back into a man. Shiva, though was not able reverse his curse, told Ila that he would be a man one month and a woman the other month. Pleased with this Ila roamed in the forest. Ila(during his life as a woman) eventually married Buddh who was neither a man nor a woman(like Ila himself) and then was born the Chandravamshi dynasty.
One would notice that the Suryavamshis are disciplined and follow strict code of conduct whereas the Chandravamshis can be best described as  "mercurial" owing to the way their lineage was born.

In the land of Shiva, nothing is right! Nothing is wrong! It is as is!
