Click on the image to see Photos!I was looking for the best options to tour around Rome. I was browsing through several forums on the internet and all agreed on one thing..private taxi is not the only way to see Rome nor its a cheap option. The moment I started walking in the streets of Rome, I realized how true this was. The whole city and its roads are so intuitive that one needs no special guidance to walk around the city. You turn right you see a monument, you turn left you see another ..its so full of rich monuments. Here are some tips for travelers, if you are making a 1 Day trip to Rome.
1. Buy an integrated ticket at any metro station :costs about 4 euros. You can use both the bus and metro using this ticket and is valid for until mid night of the day.
2. buy a map that points to important location. I didnt have a map when i visited Rome, yet it was easy. Just ask people about directions. Many speak English in Rome.
3. Get to the colosseum as soon as possible. The queue starts around 8.40 am and sometimes very long. Alternatively you could buy the passes online at Online Tickets to Colosseum
4. Visit the colosseum, the palatine hill and reach the Roman forum from the palatine hill which are all few minutes walk from each other. The whole thing should take about 2-2.5hrs if you want to finish many monuments in a day.
5. From the Roman Forum , you can walk to the Piazza Venezia and look at the beautiful buildings around.
6. Walk to the Via Del Corso which is a sort of main road with several local buses running.
7. Have lunch in any of the "Pizzeria" that you find. The Pizzeria charge differently if you dine there and less for "take away". I just packed a pizza and munched it on the the way/
8. The Pantheon and Fontana di Trevi(Roman holiday Movie Famous) are located on either side of the Via del Corso. You may have to walk into small lanes to reach them. You will find lots of tourist walking to all these important locations.
9. My suggestion is that you visit the Spanish Stairs which is at the end of the via del corso. You could take a metro to station "spagna". By now your legs are really tired, so sit down for a while. Then walk back to Fontana di Trevi and then go to the Pantheon.
10. The pantheon is a significant and beautiful place. So sit quitely on the benches inside the pantheon and close your eyes for a while You will see images of all the wonderful monuments you visited. Sitting in the pantheon also rejuvenates your body getting it ready for the next walking tour.
It will be around 3 pm when you finish all these quickly. In your hurry to see all the monuments, dont forget to enjoy the beauty of each of these. Take some snaps, just incase you didnt notice something. Most bars have toilets in them, ask for it incase of emergencies :-)
Take a metro to Ottaviano to reach Vatican. It takes 20 mins to reach. Start walking with the crowd to the Basillica. Enjoy your visit to Vatican. There will be a long queue to see the basillica. I didnt have time to go inside but the view from outside was amazing.
When you come back and sit in your return train/flight and have a look at the Rome map, you will find many many monuments that you didn't see..that's the max you can do in a Day buddy!.. Ciao!
